Arab European League on Fortuyn
ARAB EUROPEAN LEAGUE - 07.05.2002 22:08

Arab European League on Fortuyn´s death and racism

STATEMENT BY THE ARAB EUROPEAN LEAGUE (AEL)

FAR-RIGHT SHOULD BE DEFEATED DESPITE THE ASSASSINATION OF FORTUYN

Press release 7th of May 2002

Brussels- After the assassination yesterday of the Dutch far-right Demagogue Pim Fortuyn it is understandable that a wave of resentment sweeps through the political map of Europe . Political assassination is always a crime against democracy and should be condemned.

It is nonetheless crucial to keep ones perspicuity and not to fall in the trap of emotive politics. The fact that Fortuyn became a victim of violence should not create sympathy for his ideas and conceptions among democrats, he should not become a martyr of a system he did not respect. Let us not put a mask of respectability on the face of an outspoken racist just because he was murdered.

Pim Fortuyn will always be remembered by Muslims in Europe as an intolerant fanatic who wanted to ban their religion and keep them out of Holland . He was the modern day version of the same people who in the thirties of the last century demonized the Jewish religion. People like Fortuyn, De Winter or Le Pen are the modern day improved (but as dangerous) version of the Nazis. They replaced the Jews with Muslims, and the kaki uniform with Armani suits but the content of their discourse is the same: the preaching of hatred between races, cultures and religions and the promotion of a racially based state-idea.

Those people should not be permitted to take part in elections, because they do not believe in democracy and the first thing they will do if they get to power is to destroy its most basic fundament: the equality principal.

Nevertheless, the Arab European League denounces the personal approach in politics; battles should be fought on Ideas and not on individuals and their lives. The AEL is aware of that because its president was the last couple of weeks the victim of a similar personal onslaught in the Media and in political milieus. Quotations referring to the AEL and its president like "the man is more dangerous than his organization" in almost every Flemish newspaper were almost an explicit request to eliminate "the man". Others wanted to eliminate "the man" legally through deportation or through depriving him from his citizenship.

Right-extremists will try to exploit the murder of Fortuyn and transform it into a political tribute to their ideas, just like they always try to exploit every other misery or calamity and blow it out of proportion. They have now their martyr and this can only play in their favor, this is the stupidity of such an act and its irony.

The AEL calls upon all its members and sympathizers in the Netherlands and elsewhere to act with dignity in order to avoid an extreme-right victory in the coming election, a victory that can be helped by the stupid act of yesterday. Such a victory will mean the death of democracy in the Netherlands and that would definitely trigger more tragic events.

Right-extremism should be defeated now more than ever, be alert and be strong.

Wrong image of a politician
Fortuynist - 08.05.2002 14:19

Apparently the AEL finds it neccesary to make a statement over a dutch politician without knowing the man and his ideas. It´s opinion is only based on what the media brought out and what Fortuyns opponents declared to put him in an extreme right corner where he didn´t belong.

So if tha Arabic European Legion needs to comment on a dutch situation they better get their facts right otherwise it shows that the AEL is as stupid and ignorent as the killer who pulled the trigger.

keeskoppen and democracy
pluk - 08.05.2002 16:31

Is there one keeskop left who knows what democracy is about?

There is the Arab European League getting to the basic questions about democracy and its conditions and not to my surprise (but still to my despair) there is a ´fortuyist´ who doesn´t get any further than saying that they can´t know anything about it and especially shouldn´t say anything about it because they´re not dutch (enough, probably).
Those ´fortuynists´ who keep using the word "democracy" in every second phrase they utter would do tenfold better to start thinking about it even once. and if they still don´t get any further than "saying whatever comes to your mind (first)" and "counting majoraties" it would be very wise and welcome if they would listen to what people like those from the "Arab European League" have to say about it
Nederlands
Udo - 08.05.2002 22:16

The Arab European League would do tenfold better if they would bother to speak our language. Maybe we would consider listening what they want to tell us about democracy. Then again, maybe we wouldn´t if we think about the nature of democracy in the Arab countries.
