The tidal wave of new security legislation that has followed the tragic events of September 11, 2001, have made a critical examination of information politics in the network society uncommonly urgent.
A wide variety of speakers and participants including researchers, politicians, representatives of social interest groups, activists and cultural workers will examine recent developments in information security, public opinion management, new legislation for intellectual property
rights management in the digital domain, and the desire for a digital commons.
The Conference will be held in ENGLISH .

'The Network Society of Control' is a public conference in the frame of World-Information.Org, an exhibition and a cultural research project around observation and control in the network society, and the culture of new technology.
The exhibition is on show at the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam until December 15th, 2002.

The Network Society of Control
Als onderdeel van de Amsterdamse editie van World-Information.Org organiseert De Balie een tweedaagse internationale conferentie over veiligheid en controle in de informatiemaatschappij. De conferentie verkent aan de hand van drie thema¹s de obsessie met veiligheid, observatie en controle (vooral sinds 9/11) rond communicatietechnologie en in de samenleving als geheel.
Security Paranoia in the World-Info-Sphere analyseert nieuwe opsporingsmethodes, recente ontwikkelingen in de spionage industrie en de toepassingen van nieuwe opsporings, observatie en controletechnologie. Public Mind Control richt zich op de steeds verfijndere management technieken om de publieke opinie te beheersen en geeft daarbij ook bijzondere aandacht aan de wijze waarop diverse cultuuruitingen hierbij worden ingezet. Building the Digital Commons tenslotte gaat over de steeds stringentere controle over intellectuele producten (teksten, software, kennis) en hun wurgende invloed op maatschappelijke en culturele uitwisseling en ontwikkeling, juist en vooral in het digitale domein.
De conferentie wil de wenselijkheid van deze ontwikkelingen kritisch ter discussie stellen en werkbare alternatieven aandragen voor de huidige trend om de suggestie van veiligheid boven alle andere belangen te plaatsen. Hiervoor brengt de conferentie een bont geschakeerd gezelschap van ex-CIA agenten, net.kunstenaars, media theoretici, informatiejuristen, vertegenwoordigers van de Free Software beweging en maatschappelijke denkers bijeen.

The exhibition consists of the three parts "World-Infostructure", "World-C4U" and "Future Heritage" that will outline the evolution of communication technologies and their consequences in relation to society, exhibit historic and state-of-the-art control and surveillance technology and display digital artworks and installations.
