Movie and Brown Bag Discussion
12:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Event is Free

On Tuesday, September 9th, the Institute for Policy Studies will show the movie The Pinochet Case at a brown bag lunch event. This documentary, released in 2001 and directed by Patricio Guzmán (director of The Battle for Chile and Chile, Obstinate Memory), traces the struggle to bring the former Chilean dictator to justice.

The movie will be introduced by two Americans who lived in Chile under the Allende government and during the coup. Joe Eldridge: Currently the chaplain at American University, Mr. Eldridge was working in Chile at the time of the coup. He returned to the United States to fight the Pinochet dictatorship and expose U.S. involvement in the coup as the director of the Washington Office on Latin America. Carolyne Wright: Visiting Associate Professor of Creative Writing at the College of Wooster, Ms. Wright was in Allende's Chile on a Fulbright-Hayes Study Grant. She is the author of many books of poetry, including Seasons of Mangoes and Brainfire. Winner of the American Book Award, the volume is an "evocation and poetic documentary" of her time in Allende's Chile and other travels through Latin America. After the showing of the film, Stacie Jonas, director of the Institute for Policy Studies' campaign to bring Pinochet to justice will be available to answer questions about the Pinochet case and other recent developments in the struggle against impunity in Latin America.

Forty years ago, the Institute for Policy Studies opened its doors with the belief that progressive thought, advocacy, and action can build a better society. Thirty years ago, on September 11, 1973, Chile's democratically elected government, led by President Salvador Allende, was overthrown by a military coup. These two histories became inextricably linked on September 21, 1976, when agents of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet detonated a car bomb that killed former Chilean diplomat and director of the Institute's Transnational Institute, Orlando Letelier, and IPS development associate, Ronni Karpen Moffitt, in Washington, DC.

Each year since the murders, the Institute for Policy Studies has honored these fallen colleagues while celebrating new heroes of the human rights movement from the United States and elsewhere in the Americas with the Letelier-Moffitt Human Rights Awards.

The 30th anniversary of the Military Coup prompts us to focus attention on Chile's pressing need as a nation to reconstruct collective memory of that period of our history by weaving together the fragments each of us preserves and remembers from our personal lives, involvement, and pain. With this objective in mind, the historic human rights institutions have come together to organize a series of commemorative activities, entitled "Memoria y Esperanza," which will be held from August 19 to mid-October at the Salvador Allende Solidarity Museum in Santiago, Chile. The program reflects a specific facet of the history of those years, and pays tribute to the victims. It also hopes to contribute to the process of reconstructing a society on the foundation of a culture that respects human rights. MORE INFO: E-mail:  expo30@mi.cl www.chile1973-2003.cl
