We represent a special kind of homelessness. It is not that they only evict us from our homes,
they are trying to evict our dreams. Our dreams whitch we create and live in free places.

Us, the subculture emerging from unlighted basements, waterless fields, ruined factories and deserted offices and slowly but surely rising new solutions, trends, movements. Influencing culture, art, intellectuals and commons without discriminating, always questioning, always caring.

That is what creates home, dreams and love, where someone understands you, not a house. A house that is simple wall of bricks, an empty shell. They can evict us from these houses and houses we will walk away from, but the home is in our hearts and stays there forever.

Don’t try to force us in the places you find suitable. Help us survive in places we find suitable.
Being forced into mediocracy is being forced to give up your world, your believes,
your dignity. A house is not home unless it contains food and fire for the mind as well as the body

If you do not give us what belong to us in peace, we will take it by force.

This is our city!

We grow up here.
We study here.
We are born here.
We fall in love here.
We work here.
We play here.
We make culture here.
But we are not allowed to live here.
Living in Amsterdam has become a privilege.

Social houses are being sold on the free market, rents are
un-affordable, free spaces are evicted and homeless shelters are closed.
Still Amsterdam is full of empty office space, Anti-squats and Hotels.
Because we have no were else to go tonight we sleep here.

The Amsterdam once known for its progressive, tolerant and unique
character is suffering from a dangerously contagious disease.
Some people call it 'selling out' others say gentrification. How ever
you name it the main symptom is that wealth of the view is more
important then the well being of the inhabitants.
In short the decision makers choose profit of people.

Recently Amsterdam has thrown away one of it's sub-cultural treasures.
The ADM was a squatted community in the westport harbour. It housed more
then 120 people for 21 years. This place famous for it's innovating
festivals, self sustainability, perma-culture projects, Do It Youself
attitude and wild life was brutally evicted on the 7th of January.
This is another example of how the city council clearly chooses to keep
it's business connection happy while shitting on the spirit that makes
Amsterdam special.

We are part of this demonstration because it’s important for us that people in this city can live wherever and however they want without being prevented from the capitalist, patriarchal and racist structures we live in.

We find ourselves responsible to fight discriminating structures and the hierarchic power-relations – also the ones in our own minds.

The reason why we want to live in a free space is our wish for independence from hierarchies that we tend to find in houses. Houses belong to owners, they conform to standards and obey rules on which we can’t exert influence. We want to build our own infrastructure in order to understand how they work so that we can finally shape our lives in a self-determined way.

For us squatting is an emancipatory act which enables us to shape vacant rooms and areas according to our own needs. We show our solidarity with all groups and individuals who likewise empower themselves, adapt and fill new rooms.

It is often not enough to just acknowledge the existing power of patriarchal structures. Moreover, we need to consciously resist them by giving space to people who wouldn’t necessarily get it within the heteronormative daily life.

Veel succes met het vinden

Veel succes met het vinden van een Nederland/Amsterdam waar Engels praten normaal is.

We zijn hier niet in de winkels op de Kalverstraat....................

Zoals ADM weg is

Re: ADM sleeps on the Dam square.

“a special kind of homelessness”? ooh, right, because those normal homeless people, they are just homeless because of mental problems, addiction and poverty, not because they choose to fight the heroic fight against being forced into mediocracy.

“ rising new solutions, trends, movements. Influencing culture, art, intellectuals and commons” Ok, so you admit to being a driving force behind gentrification instead of being a threat to it?

“homeless shelters are closed.” Ok, so is this why you choose to turn your squats time and again into a cultural or art space? Why don’t you explicitly turn it into a homeless shelter for once then? (by which I mean for the “not special kind of homeless people”)

“perma-culture projects” Perma culture at the ADM? you’ve got to be kidding right? ooh so you made a hugelkultur once, woohoo.

“brutally evicted” If you think that was brutal, then I wish you good luck with future resistance. You are going to need it.

“We want to build our own infrastructure in order to understand how they work so that we can finally shape our lives in a self-determined way.” Ooh, so that is why you choose time and again to squat something with already existing infrastructures? Self-determination? So that is why most of you talk and look the same, make the same kind of culture, music, etc. and use the same kind of arguments?

Amsterdam is special. Yes it is. It is special because when you want to have your own little company in the cultural field or work as a ZZP’er, it is of course a lot easier to do so in Amsterdam. I you are a starting young cultural entrepreneur, you know that your market is mostly found around a city like Amsterdam. The chance for success is bigger when you start there. We already know that is what is “special” about Amsterdam, that that is the reason why Amsterdam attracts all those young (art)students from the suburbs and small towns who dream of changing the world with their “special” art and culture. (how many little cultural start ups came to be born on ADM?)

“Help us survive” Right, because like so many people now coming from war torn countries who are fighting for their literal physical survival, your struggle for survival means that your foremost priority is to do whatever it takes to find a place for your loved ones, including young children, off the streets in cold winter? Or should we understand “survival” as a metaphor maybe? As in, we want our niche culture to survive because that is the economic field we have our investment in? (I don’t use sub-, because the etymological root of subversion would be a joke here)

The more you show of yourself the last weeks through statements like these, the more obvious it becomes why despite so many claims for solidarity on the internet, so little people bothered to show up in person at the eviction to help you. Then there are also things like “meme” pictures on the internet where the destruction of art on the ADM is equated with cultural destruction by war and oppression in the middle east in the 60’s for example. The more you use this ridiculous rhetoric, the more you show how much you have lost touch with the problems people are dealing with these days. So please keep doing it and keep contributing to showing your own irrelevance for the struggle for a free and just world in a truly radical and emancipatory way.

Greetings from a fellow activist, fighting for a world where I as a transgender will indeed one day be able to feel like the world is as much for me as for anybody else. While always keeping in mind that my situation being trans in the Netherlands is not much to complain about compared to trans women of color in other less wealthy and safe parts of the world. I learned a lot from seeing white cis people in Amsterdam speaking about their supposed fight against patriarchy and heteronormativity, using the same kind of rhetoric as being used here. Equating their problems like being “queer” in Amsterdam to those of sexual minorities who have to fear for their lives just because they are a minority. It almost makes you wonder, if that scene and the current cultural squatting scene in Amsterdam maybe shares some common ideologues huh?

Hear hear

Valid criticism and well articulated. There is nothing wrong with old skool squatting and defending your ground, even, or especially, against the odds.
