The Dutch ship MV Doggersbank with 1000 t of depleted uranium on board will reach the Russian port of St Petersburg today. It left Rotterdam harbour last Friday after it took the depleted uranium from the German uranium enrichment plant Gronau on board. Vorige week was dit nieuws te lezen: Nederland zal constructief meedenken over een alternatief voor de Europese grondwet. Premier Balkenende heeft dat bondskanselier Merkel in Berlijn toegezegd. Merkel wil voor de zomer met een nieuw voorstel komen dat voor alle 27 lidstaten aanvaardbaar is. Nederland wil dat de EU-besluitvorming transparanter en democratischer wordt.

 The occupied house in Copenhagen, Denmark named 'Ungdomshuset' has functioned as a very important political and social cultural centre since 1982. It had been involved in a long political and legal battle for its existance. But on Thursday morning (1st March) at around 7am Danish police made an end to this by entering the roof of the building using a helicopter and start an unannouced full scale eviction. Riot-police sealed off nearby streets quickly and attacked the building using teargas. As the whole area was closed off, documenting the action and police-behaviour was difficult. Some witnesses say that teargas and police violence was plentiful, although the eviction happened swiftly and according to police in a "relatively calm manner". At the moment everything is but calm. Over 1000 people are reported to be back onto the streets last night and (burning) barricades blocked off some major roads in the city. Over 200 people have now been arrested, including at least 17 of non-danish nationality. Some people have been admitted to hospital. Riots have continued throughout the day and night and solidarity actions spontaniosly broke out in cities across europe: Berlin (300+), Köln, Hamburg (700+), München, Karlsruhe, Göttingen, Frankfurt, Bremen (300+), Magdeburg, Hannover, Vienna, Heidelberg, Gothenburg, Oslo, Helsinki, Stockholm (100+), Flensburg, Göttingen, Marburg, Potsdam and Leipzig. Over the next few days many more demonstrations and actions are planned and Danish activists have called for people to make Saturday 3rd March an international day of action. Danish police have started to draft in re-inforcements from all over the country and many more activists are set to arrive in the capital in the coming days. Op 6 januari JL is aan de Zonnenlaan in Groningen de hond Cookie in beslag genomen. Dit was geheel ten onrechte gebeurd. Uiteindelijk heeft de burgemeester J. Wallage besloten Cookie terug te geven aan de eigenaresse. Dit omdat er niet onomstotelijk vast gesteld kan worden dat het hier gaat om een gevaarlijke hond. (Gelet op uiterlijke kenmerken.)
De vrienden van Cookie hebben in de tussentijd veel brieven geschreven aan de Partij voor de dieren om advies in te winnen. Helaas bleek de partij niet bereikbaar voor commentaar.
De PVDD brengt naar buiten voor afschaffing van de RAD te zijn maar in werkelijkheid staat de partij achter de RAD en wil deze zelfs verscherpen.
Pas nadat het oordeel van de burgemeester daar was heeft de Partij voor de dieren kamervragen gesteld. Dit zonder kennisgeving aan de vrienden van Cookie. Read on... | | Second uranium transport from Almelo ??

Over the last days news has come in that tonight not only a train with depleted uranium waste from the German border town Gronau (near Enschede) but also lorries with uranium waste from the uranium enrichment plant Almelo will go to Rotterdam.
In Rotterdam the uranium waste will be loaded onto a ship and then forwarded to St Petersburg before it goes by train to Siberia.

Urenco - the tri-national company owning uranium enrichment plants in Almelo, Capenhurst/GB and Gronau/D - is currently preparing yet another train-load full of depleted uranium for transport from Gronau (just beyond the Dutch border from Enschede) to Russia. The trains go all the way through the Netherlands via Hengelo-Almelo-Deventer-Apeldoorn-Amersfoort-Utrecht and Rotterdam where the depleted uranium is loaded onto ships and is forwarded to St Petersburg.
