What was the political and personal role of the rulers of Amsterdam? And what were the consequences for the development of Amsterdam and its inhabitants? Which effects had the choices of the rulers on the lives of the slaves in America, Africa and Asia? Should we re-evaluate the role of these companies and the notion of the ‘Golden Age’?
