De Zapatistas beginnen vandaag aan iets nieuws. Hier een stuk van Reuters bij gebrek aan beter. Alle andere info was in het Spaans.

Zapatista Marcos to Return to Limelight in Jamboree

OVENTIC, Mexico (Reuters) - After a two-year absence, Mexico's Zapatista rebel leader, Subcomandante Marcos, was to emerge from his jungle hideout this weekend for a musical jamboree to revive the cause of indigenous rights.
Chiapas state officials expected thousands of people to converge on the highland village of Oventic to launch self-proclaimed Good-Government Committees that will give greater autonomy to 30 municipalities run by the Zapatistas, who took up arms almost 10 years ago.
Whole families of Tzotzil Indians sporting typical Zapatista ski masks arrived in trucks at the village, where a basketball tournament and folk music concerts were under way.
"I came for Marcos," said one hooded Indian.
"Here the People Rule and the Government Obeys," read a poster on the road into the village in the southern state. The committees will have the power to raise "brotherly taxes" from the villages of 10 percent of aid grants given to them by non-governmental organizations.
Although Marcos himself has not said he would turn up, Zapatista organizers said they expected him at the event which runs from Friday to Sunday.
True to the rhetorical style that made him an anti-globalization icon, Marcos promised in a recent statement that the weekend may turn into "a hyper-mega-magna-super-duper concert for no other reason than the joy of staying alive and being a rebel."
The Zapatista National Liberation Army burst onto the scene in January 1994 by taking over towns in Chiapas in clashes that killed around 150 people. The rebels have rarely used violence since.
The Zapatistas, who take their name from early 20th century Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata, control dozens of impoverished Indian villages in the jungles and mountains of southern Mexico near the Guatemalan border.
OFF THE AGENDA
The Zapatistas fell off Mexico's political map after thousands of rebels and their followers, led by Marcos, marched to the capital in 2001 to push for an indigenous rights bill for Mexico's 10 million to 12 million Indians.
Congress later passed a law that fell short of giving the political autonomy promised to the Zapatistas in a 1996 peace deal and the rebels went back disappointed to their jungle strongholds.
The true identity of Marcos has never been fully confirmed although the government has named him as left-wing activist Rafael Guillen.
Political commentators say the pipe-smoking rebel has timed his return to the limelight to take advantage of disillusionment with the government of President Vicente Fox.
Another Mexican figure from the 1990s, former President Carlos Salinas, has also made some high profile appearances recently, leading to speculation he may be planning a political comeback despite being linked to corruption scandals.
"They are taking advantage of the disappointment, the down time. The timing is calculated. They are good politicians, both Salinas and Marcos," said political analyst Lorenzo Meyer.
Fox won presidential elections in 2000, ending 71 years of one-party rule by the Institutional Revolutionary Party. As part of his campaign, he promised to negotiate an end to the Zapatista issue "in 15 minutes."
Fox also failed to push much-vaunted economic reforms through Congress and his party lost mid-term elections in July.

Helaas geeft deze alleen heel letterlijke vertalingen. Daar word je niet veel wijzer van (zie voorbeeld hieronder). Maar vertalingen naar het Engels gaan meestal veel beter (zelf gebruik ik meestal AltaVista).
