 Oaxaca, Mexico. Wat in mei dit jaar begon als een massale staking van leraren voor betere werkomstandigheden, is uitgemond in een brede sociale opstand van de bevolking van Oaxaca. Deze organiseerde zich in een coalitie van meer dan 350 organisaties, de Asamblea Popular de los Pueblos de Oaxaca (APPO). De eerste eis was dat de corrupte en fascistische gouverneur Ulises Ruiz Ortiz en zijn bewind het veld zouden ruimen. Maar nu gaan de eisen veel verder, en is een veel bredere politieke agenda opgesteld om af te rekenen met de onderdrukking en uitbuiting die al eeuwen immens veel leed veroorzaken. Naar aanleiding van de oproep van De Andere Campagne (gestart door de Zapatistas), voor een nationale staking op 20 November, worden internationaal akties gepland, ook in Nederland [1]. Deze dag valt samen met de inauguratie van Obrador door zijn aanhangers. Obrador is de linkse presidentskandidaat die deze zomer de verkiezingen in Mexico verloor na fraude door de tegenpartij. De Mexicaanse regering heeft geweigerd acceptabele concessies te doen aan de beweging in Oaxaca, en wordt nu geconfronteerd met overal opspringend verzet: de ideeën, verlangens en akties van de bevolking zijn niet langer te onderdrukken.  the Seventh Megamarch returned a scene of total war to the historic city centre of oaxaca this evening. the battle started nearing 4pm, shortly after the people layed siege to Zocalo Square and the PFP. it lasted several hours, until the Federal Repressor Force (PFP) started to advance through different areas of the city, arresting and beating dozens of people amongst them many women. there are reports that talk of more than 400 disappeared, dozens of arrested and people wounded with life ammunition coming from the PFP. the number of wounded is still unknown.  Cinco Señores barricade, positioned in front of the university to protect the radio within it and the autonomy of the university, is the last major barricade in Oaxaca City. Some of the most rebellious elements within the APPO have been the students and the barricade defenders at the University Benito Juarez. The barricade is known as the "Barricade of Victory" for the defeat of thousands of federal preventive police by merely a few hundred people who defended the university radio during an attempted eviction on Nov. 2nd.
