The 12nd of February the next hearing of the "Barchem 4" case will take place in Rotterdam, Netherlands. It's unclear whether if this will be the last hearing before the sentence or not.
As many of you already know, the prosection has asked for 10 months of custody + 5 months of probation time for 3 of the defendants, and for 15 full months of custody for the fourth defendant.
To better understand how this case has developed it’s useful to point out that:
- A special police unit has been formed several years ago just with the aim of gathering intelligence against activists and organize repression against the animal liberation movement in the Netherlands.
- Several surveillance methods have been used against the activists : tracking devices under cars, physical surveillance, phone have been tapped for long extensions of time.
- During the trial the prosecution still has not provided any good reason for the observation methods used: we still don’t know why such a massive amount of police surveillance was employed against the activists, even if the lawyers of the defendants repeatedly asked for answers on this matter.
