Response from the Alarm! collective about the recent internet affairs

Hier kun je discussieren over Response from the Alarm! collective about the recent internet affairs.
In recent days, there has been a lot of critique raised against the Alarm! collective and the Safer space policy we introduced to our events. Unfortunately, almost none of the criticism was really addressed to us and most was based on the assumption that we are trying to be like the Power of Definition movement, which is not true. We do not affiliate with that movement, so the critiques of us doing so, deserve to be called into question. The criticism brought against us is not based on things we really did, stated or intended to do.

Therefore we’ve decided not to react on the details stated in the Indymedia article “power of definition in ACU” and instead provide the latest version of our Safer Space leaflet and poster (those were present on our latest event, on 13th of February), so everyone can decide how valid the critique is or not:

http://acualarm.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/alarm_safer_leaflet2.pdf
http://acualarm.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/alarm_safer_poster2.pdf

Luckily, no incident occurred during our last two events, so this has been our only “Safer space” activity so far – and thus all the hypothesis about us (over)reacting on suspected harassment, refusing to give people a chance to defend themselves, limiting someone’s attempts to open discussions etc. are just assumptions.

Everyone, who has tried to approach us in a constructive manner, knows that we are open to discussion and ready to revise our stance in case the points raised are valid. That’s also why the latest version of poster differs from the older one that is (incompletely) quoted in the internet discussions – we agreed to make it clearer so that the text is the stance of the Alarm! collective (and not of ACU as a whole), and replaced the pink tape for the safety persons by other ways of identification (as the choice of pink tape was accidental – there was no intention to relate us to the Power of Definition movement).

We won’t get involved in the anonymous discussions under this article or elsewhere on internet. If you have further questions or points of discussion, please contact us via FB or e-mail, or even better come to the next Alarm! night, which will take place on ACU on 25th of March and hold discussion with us personally.

With love,
The Alarm! collective

Direct ervan uitgaan dat iemand dader is i.p.v. verdachte. Bah, wat een politie feministen.

they say "we prefer having to

they say
"we prefer having to apologize to a wrongly accused ‘perpetrator’ than not supporting a survivor"
What a bastards!

I agree with them when it's

I agree with them when it's about rape or physical sexual harrasment, but they seem to mean always.
Wouldn't you rather ban somebody for a night if this is the case?

What is the reason for the

What is the reason for the assumption that Alarm! is aiming to ban everybody?

Good Faith?

Because with this set of ruels they can.

In my opinion nobody can be trusted with the full power of being a creator, judge and executor of ruels in a place.
Who will monitor this person? And if you critisise this person will you be allowed to? Or will they say that by stepping in to the acu you agree with these ruels, so you have to keep to them? If you don't agree with them better not come?

To me this set of ruels leaves to much blanks that can (not will) be abused. I do not want to be asked to have faith in ruels that are so easy to be abused.
With these blanks how do I know they will take critism on their structure? How do I know they wil try to find the truth after an accusation? How do I know they won't just follow their emotions and suspend a person that didn't do nothing wrong.
Where do they draw the line? Do people get trown out for saying a "wrong" word or giving the wrong look?

I think power corrupts. I wouldn't trust myself, my friends or Alarm! with the power they are asking to be given.

Misogyny.... where?!

I love how the article "Intersectionality for anarchists 101" I posted on Indymedia got *zero* responses (https://www.indymedia.nl/node/20945) and the article bashing awesome people trying to create safer and more inclusive spaces full of bullshit got over 60 and they were full of misogynist crap, nobody is speaking out against (https://www.indymedia.nl/node/21333). . .

I understand you dont reply

I understand you dont reply to this, but I'll pitch in my opinion here anyway.

1. Sexism, racism, etc etc etc: the problem is not in the words that are used but the practices they sometimes refer to. By which I mean that one can use sexist/racist words (that is, words defined as racist/sexist by someone[s]) and be sexist/racist in practice (that is, act differently to people from different sexes and races and/or think people from a different sex or race should and/or do act differently from them because of their differing sex or race), or alternatively one can NOT use those words but still be sexist/racist in practice, or do use those words and NOT be sexist/racist in practice. What your policy accomplishes, at best, is that people no longer are overtly sexist/racist. You drive sexism/racism 'underground' (from the standpoint of ACU), i.e into places like the home, the kitchen, the workplace etc. Defeating sexism/racism, like defeating capitalism, has to do with defeating the PRACTICES that sustain them, not taking a big black marker and deleting the words that refer to them.

2. Explicit consent is ridiculous in alot of cases. "Can I kiss you?", how about just having a feel for the moment, looking for implicit signs and just being spontaneous? And, ofcourse, if you happen to be mistaken, apologise. Shit happens. And this does not just apply to kissing or even anything remotely having to do with sex or love or whatever; too often i see some people in 'your corner' responding ridiculously aggressive to any sign of spontaneity that might be interpreted as machismo or whatever; that is, any time any male at least, especially when heterosexual and white, does anything without.. well i'll admit this will be a gross exaggeration but this is the feeling I get.. first dropping to his knees and asking for formal permission. Really, I'm trying to engage constructively with 'your corner', but when I can no longer 'be myself' (and yes, please notify me of when, in your opinion, 'myself' is being sexist and/or racist, and if I agree I will change 'myself', and in most cases when it makes you uncomfortable i will stop it too, though please also accept that there are/will be circumstances in which you, just as there are circumstances where I, will have to 'get over' yourself/myself), then FUCK, you make ME uncomfortable! And who the fuck can i go to complain to then???

Give me a scene where there are no rules but just alot of people who care for each other and look out for each other, are not afraid to point at each other's faults but at the same time also understand, do not get defensive/aggressive when criticized but try to understand where the criticism comes from, and above all have a sense of humour and don't take everything TOO seriously. Life should be fun. It's already being, very often, made not fun at all, by sexism, racism, capitalism, etc. Now, please, do not, in the attempt to destroy what destroys our fun, make spontaneity and fun impossible because before doing anything or uttering any word you have to think not only twice, but three-four-five-six-seven-times to ensure you do not say or do anything which might in some way, in some possible interpretation, break any of the many rules you lay down to combat what destroys our fun.

Life is contextual, dynamic, it flows, you cannot segment it. You cannot chop it up into little pieces, examine each fragment and on the basis of that fragment alone decide "good" vs "evil". So you cannot legislate life, doing so will kill it.

Give me a scene where there

Give me a scene where there are no rules....bla bla bla.....
A new rule: Everyone who respect men and woman are welcome.
Not written on a fucking poster
Fuck off

"Everyone, who has tried to

"Everyone, who has tried to approach us in a constructive manner, knows that we are open to discussion and ready to revise our stance in case the points raised are valid."

alright, obviously what i

alright, obviously what i meant was "give me a scene where there are no FORMAL rules", implicit, flowing, ever-changing rules [e.g what is 'respect' is always contingent on the exact context and dynamic within it] are of course a part of life. In a similar vein as those who say "fuck all organization" still organize, just informally.

I just want to point out that

I just want to point out that if a person kisses me spontanously and I don't like it I should be allowed to hit them as a spontanous reaction of disagreement. If people don't want to get hit they should ask or otherwise take the chance.

Definitely!!! could not

Definitely!!! could not possibly agree more.

I don't see these rules as

I don't see these rules as being specifically aimed at men, *everyone* regardless of their gender and that of the other person should get explicit consent before engaging in any kind of sexual act with them. Not everyone does have a feel for the moment, and in general I find that the more people have had to drink the less they have a feel for it. I've had both drunk men and women try to kiss me or touch me when I wasn't interested, and it's incredibly unpleasant, especially the time a guy actually shoved his tongue into my mouth and had his hand on my breast before he realised (or responded to the fact) that I was trying to push him away. Fuck yeah he should have asked first, as he was almost too drunk to stand let alone make any kind of accurate judgment about my level of interest in him.

Asking for explicit consent is not about men having to 'drop to their knees and ask for formal permission', I as a woman should also ask for consent before making any physical moves on anyone else. And if someone has assessed the moment correctly, having them look into your eyes and ask 'can I kiss you?' can be bloody sexy *and* spontaneous.

Mooi

questions

About the flyer piece overall, it seems like the awarness person (or other name it goes by) is the only one who has the power to kick out people. One person having all the power that does not seem anarchist to me. Besides it's a very easily corruptible system. People are not objective, we can try, but we all carry our own luggage that blurs our judgement.
So how do you make sure that people don't get sent out for being a more than avarage extravert white male or having the wrong look on their faces?

And why is there no nuance, to me there is a big diffrence between winking at somebody, grabing someones butt and raping someone. I see nothing of how to handle these diffrent stages. I would think it's absurd to sent somebody out for winking, but when we talk about rape sending someone out is not enough for me.
So do you sent people out for winking at the wrong person, without any harmfull intention? If they say sorry I didn't mean to insult you, do they still get sent out if the "victim" wants so?

And can you tell me what's wrong with cats, dogs, rats etc? Do they need to be called non-human animals in your philosophy?
Because I mean no harm to a dog when I name it dog, I respect and love them.

Removing the perpetrator from the event

From the leaflet: "We can offer you: [....] Removing the perpetrator from the event."

And: "If necessary, we will always give the benefit of the doubt to the survivor: we prefer having to apologize to a wrongly accused ‘perpetrator’ than not supporting a survivor!"

But will they apologise? No! Because they won't investigate. Because survivors ... eh victims are always right.

Going to the alarm meeting means that you are giving up your human rights - assumption of innocence - voluntarily.

I won't.

Onderbouw jullie klachten
