Remember the deaths of Fortress Europe
Sunday 11 June – 5 pm – De Dam, Amsterdam

One day before the annual “European Day 4 Border Guards” in Warsaw we will remember the victims of Fortress Europe. We will organise a protest on De Dam in Amsterdam, on Sunday the 11th of June from 5 to 6 PM. Bring a white sheet for this “corpse”-protest.

In the first months of this year more than a thousand refugees died in the Mediterranean Sea. Last year more than 5000 people died on the same route, a dark record. This is a direct consequence of the policies of the European Union: Fortress Europe with its fences, patrols, ships, air-planes and soldiers. The European border-guard organisation Frontex has a leading role in this structure.

On Sunday the 11th of June we will remember the victims of Fortress Europe, the refugees who have died during their journey, in Europe or after deportation. The European border-guards will celebrate their annual party two days later, organised by Frontex. Companies will also display their newest products and technology made to stop and deter refugees. It is extremely cynical that this lethal industry and the profits that they make are celebrated on this day.

Frontex is being made into a European border and coastguard since last year. In a few year the number of staff will double and the budget will rise to more than 320 million euros, fifty times as much than at its inception in 2005. Frontex will also gain more authority and mandates, like not having to consult a member state before taking action in patrolling its borders and being allowed to purchase their own equipment.

That last point will profit the European military industry. This industry has, thanks to its long and intensive lobbying, pushed for militarising the outer borders of Europe. With finances from the EU states will build security-fences at their borders and deploy military personnel and weapons to stop refugees.

These policies are directly responsible for thousands of deaths in the Mediterranean Sea and elsewhere, because refugees are forced to take more dangerous routes in order to get to Europe.

Frontex will also cooperate more closely with countries outside of Europe, for instance in Africa. African countries are being pressured to stop refugees before they attempt to get into Europe. The EU will not have to worry about human rights and keeps “the problem” outside of their territories. Cooperation with dictatorships like Sudan and Eritrea is part of this plan.

Frontex is also tasked with deporting refugees. It coordinates deportation-flights, whereby people from different EU member-states are flown to their country of origin. One of the first of those flights was in March, destined for Afghanistan. A country ravaged by war, repression and poverty, that nonetheless is deemed safe enough to deport refugees to by the EU.

4Freedom Of Movement is a new initiative by people who want to radically oppose the refugee policies of the EU. No more exclusion, incarceration and deportation, but refuge and help, and last but not least fighting against the causes that force people to flee. It is Western economic and military policies, past and present, that cause the problems that refugees flee from.
