1 Mei demonstratie: Een stad voor de mensen. Geen speeltuin voor de rijken

Massaal worden er betaalbare woning gesloopt om plaats te maken voor luxeappartementen. Steeds meer mensen kunnen geen betaalbare woning meer vinden. De stad wordt langzaam maar zeker een plek waar de meeste mensen niet meer welkom lijken te zijn. Terwijl voor velen de woonsituatie steeds onzekerder wordt, is er een proces gaande dat iedereen die niet bij de rijke elite hoort verdrukt naar de buitenwijken of zelfs naar buiten de steden.
Het is een proces wat als een sluipmoordenaar te werk gaat. Buurten en straten worden gevuld met pop-up stores waar hippe beginnende ondernemers goedkoop kunnen huren. Dit klinkt leuk maar dit gebeurt slechts om een straat of buurt in financiële zin op te waarderen. Uiteindelijk, als de buurt hip genoeg is, zal sociale woningbouw worden gesloopt om vervolgens ruimte te maken voor huizen die onbetaalbaar zijn. Zo worden de huidige bewoners verdrukt uit hun buurt waarna er een elitaire eenheidsworst overblijft. Door dit proces, ook wel gentrificatie genoemd, stijgen de huren enorm terwijl mensen hun inkomen hetzelfde blijft. Ook verdwijnen de kleine winkeltjes en sociaal toegankelijke ruimtes om plaats te maken voor dure en exclusieve winkels, hotels en cupcakewinkels. Als we dit proces geen halt toe roepen verandert de stad in een speeltuin die slechts voor de rijken is weggelegd. De stad is niet bedoeld om grenzeloos veel geld aan te verdienen maar zou een plek moeten zijn waar bewoners zich vrij moeten kunnen voelen en waar iedereen zich maximaal zou moeten kunnen ontplooien.
Het proces van gentrificatie is een schoolvoorbeeld van een systeem van uitbuiting dat alleen uitgaat van de belangen van de allerrijksten. Een kapitalistisch systeem dat winst boven de mensen stelt. Als we een gelijkwaardige stad willen waar iedereen een plek heeft moeten we niet alleen gentrificatie bestrijden maar ook het kapitalisme. Daarom gaan we op 1 mei de straat op.
1 mei is internationaal de dag dat er over heel de wereld mensen de straat op gaan voor een gelijkwaardige wereld zonder uitbuiting en kapitalisme. Ook in Den Haag zal er een demonstratie zijn om ons te laten horen tegen de verdrukking van mensen met minder geld uit de stad, tegen het systeem wat ons uitbuit. Omdat de stad van ons allemaal is en we genoeg hebben van nog meer elitaire bouwprojecten. Kom daarom naar de demonstratie op 1 mei in Den Haag.

1st of May Demonstration: A city for the people. Not a playground for the rich!
Affordable housing is being demolished on a large scale. A growing number of people cannot find affordable living space. The city is slowly turning into a space where most people don’t seem to be welcome anymore. Many people find themselves in precarious housing situations; those who aren’t rich are being pushed out to the city’s peripheries or beyond.
This happens in a process that works as a silent killer. Streets and neighbourhoods are filled with pop-up stores where hip entrepreneurs can kick-start their business with relatively low rents. Although this may sound attractive, it only happens in order to financially upgrade a certain street or neighbourhood. Once the neighbourhood is attractive enough for investors, low-income housing will be replaced with unaffordable homes and exclusive businesses. The local residents will be driven out of their neighbourhood; what remains is generic elitism. Because of this process, known as gentrification, rents rise dramatically while people’s incomes remain the same. This increases the gap between the rich and the poor. Small shops and socially accessible spaces will also disappear to give way to exclusive shops, hotels and cupcake shops. If we don’t stop this process, the city will be turned into a playground reserved only for the rich. The city should not be an instrument for endless profit making, but a place where people should feel free and where everybody should be able to maximally develop themselves.
The process of gentrification is a textbook example of a system that only works in the interests of the very rich. An exploitative capitalist system which puts profit above and before people. If we want an equal city in which everyone has a place we need to fight capitalism as well as gentrification. That’s why we will take to the streets on the 1st of May.
The 1st of May is the day when people over the entire world take to the streets to demand an equal world without exploitation and capitalism. In The Hague we will raise our voices against the push-out of people with less money from the inner city. Because the city belongs to us all and we’ve had enough of elitist building projects.
