English below: October 6: day of action against family prison for refugees at Kamp Zeist

October 6: day of action against family prison for refugees at Kamp Zeist

Recently, the Municipality of Zeist has granted the building permit for the construction of the family prison for refugees at Kamp Zeist. Construction company De Vries en Verburg has gotten the job this summer.
On Tuesday October 6 we are going to demonstrate at Kamp Zeist in the afternoon, first against the companies that are working there and then to support the prisoners behind the wall. After that we go to City Hall in the evening to demonstrate because the Town Council has the family prison on the agenda during their meeting.

Demonstration at Kamp Zeist: Get together at 3.30 PM on the field just after the overpass over the A28.

At KampZeist, we first want to go to the main entrance, where companies that are working inside the wall of Kamp Zeist (there is also work being done to renew/expand the existing detention center), and this is not only De Vries en Verburg, are leaving the gate at the end of the working day. We want to make clear to them that they are making their hands dirty by cooperating in construction-work for the incarceration and deportation of refugees, in particular families with children.
After that we walk to the other side of Kamp Zeist, to the wall. There we will hold a solidarity demonstration for the refugees locked up inside, to let them know that there are a lot of people outside demanding their freedom, because freedom is not freedom unless everyone is free.
Not refugees are the problem, but the world-wide exploitation of the third world with poverty, war and environmental disasters as a result, that is called capitalism.
Shortly, next to Kamp Zeist, on the terrain of the former military aviation museum, 750 refugees will come in an emergency shelter. It is extremely ironic that the Dutch state gives shelter to refugees to make a good impression and locks up refugees on the other side of the fence in Kamp Zeist in order to send them back to their misery! What distinguishes one refugee from the other, except for that they are depending on the IND to give them status and that the one is being believed and the other not? What gives the state the right to determine who is a 'real' refugee?

Demonstration / picket-line at Town Hall Zeist: start at 7 PM in front of the Town Hall.

At 7 PM the Town Council starts with the Round Table. After that at 9 PM the meeting of the Town Council itself will start.
During the meeting of the Town Council the permit for the construction will be an issue, because letters of people who objected to the building permit are on the agenda as incoming mail to be dealt with by Mayor and Aldermen.

In a decision list dating August 27 the Municipality says the following about granting the building permit for the family prison:
"The State Real Estate Company wants to use part of the Zeist detention center at the Richelleweg (Kamp Zeist) for a Closed Family Provision. Here, asylum seekers are detained as a family in a situation that resembles as much as possible on "a normal environment." Your council is being asked to grant permit for the construction of a multifunctional building and the apartments mentioned above. Given the public interest in how the Netherlands deals with asylum seekers, this application shall be considered a politically sensitive application so that the application can not be dealt with by mandate. By law, as the application meets all the requirements, the license should be granted."
Naturally, this is asking for protest, even resistance, against this bureaucratic decision, devoid of any principled consideration. Does the Town Council think, just like the building companies, that they are not responsible for locking up refugees, because 'by law' it is determined that the application meets 'all requirements'?

Planning of the day of action:

3:30 PM: Kamp Zeist, at the end of the Kampweg, just past the overpass across the A28.Demonstration in front of the gate and after that at the wall. Bring materials to make noise so the prisoners can hear us in their cells. End of demonstration at Kamp Zeist around 6 PM.
6 PM - 7 PM: To Town Hall, with your own transport or together by public transport (bus). Bring some food and drink for on the way.
7 PM: Town Hall Zeist. Picket-line/demonstration in front of Town Hall. We ask people who wrote letters to the Town Council ot read them during the demonstration. Do you also have something to say, then there is time and place for it. Bring banners and boards and material to make noise. The Municipality of Zeist shall at least not be able to have the family prison at Kamp Zeist built in silence!
You can join us all day, or if you can only take part in the afternoon or in the evening, you can join only that part.
