TJP Human Shield Action
tjp - 08.02.2003 21:41

Ken Nichols O’Keefe, founding member of the TJP Human Shield Action, has been refused entry into Turkey and is now being detained in Italy. He may be forced to return to the USA.

We recognize that Ken may not reach Iraq as a human shield. Ken envisioned a mass migration to Iraq that would stand in the face of US/UK aggression. The global movement that has grown around the human shield action, aimed at protecting the people of Iraq, will not be stopped by the loss of one individual.

In a few short weeks, this human shield action has seen inquiries from around the world. We have established volunteer connections in France, Italy, Spain, Turkey, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the USA, Mexico, Belgium, Germany, the Balkans, and elsewhere. All of these people share a common idea. The volunteers of this action believe that the situation of the Iraqi civilian population is so unjust that they have sacrificed the safety of there homes and families, many have left their jobs, and they face the possibility of not coming back. This doesn’t slow us down - because nothing has changed for the people who we are trying to support.

This action is a leap of faith for a much greater cause. We are not a well-established organization. We are a group of individuals trying to facilitate action by people who feel they need to stand up and say “we will not sit by and support a war which sees the massive deaths of innocent civilians, the debilitation of a country already depressed and still desperately attempting to supply such basic amenities as clean water”.

The world’s inaction is the cause of this situation, and it must be the world’s action that remedies it.

This is a case of the most basic human rights. Let all the political leaders know, let your neighbors, and your friends and family know. We are on our way to Iraq! We can stop this war!

TJP HUMAN SHIELD ACTION

February 9th 2003
Ken Nichols O’Keefe, founding member of the TJP Human Shield Action, is no longer being detained by any authority and has resolved any issues concerning his freedom to travel. He is now waiting for repairs to be completed to the bus to complete the journey to Iraq.

As a result of the breakdown and subsequent repairs, he has called for 30 more human shields to join him on the black bus leaving Rome on Friday 14th February.
