Bombardementen in Irak

Vanochtend vroeg barstte de hel weer los in Irak. Verschillende steden en dorpen werden gebombardeerd. Hulp voor slachtoffers blijft vaak uit. Gewonden liggen op straat dood te gaan. Was die oorlog niet al afgelopen?
In het journaal horen we er waarschijnlijk niets van. Het is tussen het andere nieuws van vandaag (schietpartij in de metro, gevangenis mag konijnen afschieten) niet belangrijk genoeg, of erger - we horen alleen het nieuws zoals het door de bezetters wordt vrijgegeven: In Irak is het onrustig; Nederlandse militarien verhogen paraatheid; Britten bechoten door querillas.
Des te belangrijker is het te proberen nieuws van binnenin Irak te krijgen dat niet door het bezettingsleger is gescreend. Occupation Watch Center in Bagdad probeert in deze behoefte te voorzien. Gefinancierd door een hoop NGO's en gerund door voornamelijk Irakeze vrijwilligers brengen zij het nieuws zoals het door Irakeze burgers onder bezetting wordt gezien. Vanochtend een paniekerig mailtje van Mevrouw Eman, medewerkster van Occupation Watch Center in Bagdad:
"Iraqi cities are being sieged and bombed by missiles and tanks. Sadr, Adamiya, Kufa, Falloja, Shula and others. Civilians are being killed.
The highway to Falluja is closed. News from Falluja say that bodies are lying in the streets, no ambullances, no water, no electricity.
Journalists are not allowed in, cameras are smashed. They say this will go on for days. pls help.

Dit is het nieuws dat we niet horen vandaag. Cameras niet gewenst. De Amerikanen zijn volop bezig een zwaar offensief te volbrengen in een oorlog die volgens hen al afgelopen is. De taktiek die zij hierbij toepassen houdt het midden tussen de vergeldingsacties van het Israelische leger en de beleger-en-verover tactieken van de Arkanovci in de Bosnische oorlog. Het leger belegert en bombardeerd, dagenlang. Daarna komen de special forces, zij veroveren het murw gebombardeerde gebied en doden de overgebleven Irakezen zonder uniform, die ze illigal combattants noemen. Illegal combattants?
Ik ken de mensen achter Occupation Watch vrij goed. Ze zijn te zeer begaan met het lot van Irak om zomaar wat te roepen. Dit bericht is echt, dit gebeurt vandaag, de paniek is echt. In irak woedt een vreselijke oorlog die, om het niet te moeilijk te maken voor politici de bezettende macht, uit de pers wordt geweerd. Er worden op grote schaal oorlogsrechten en mensenrechten geschonden, individuen doodgemaakt door bezetters. Nederland doet mee aan deze bezetting.

Over 600 members of the US armed forces have died as a result of the invasion of Iraq with deaths effecting families in every US state. The Pentagon now says that in the first year of war in Iraq, the military made over 18,000 medical evacuations - representing 11,700 casualties. But even this number could be low since the military is increasingly outsourcing jobs and using private contractors as mercenaries. The exact number of Iraqis who have died as a result of the US occupation is not known, but Iraqi Body Count has documented 7,350 deaths which resulted directly from coalition military actions just "during the "major-combat" phase prior to May 1st 2003".

PS Falloja people sent a call to Kofi Annan and intel orgs, also doctors of Falloja sent a mesage asking for help bc people are dying from bleeding, they talk about
lack of medicine and equipment to help the injured. Falloja is still under siege. Aljazeera said that families are evacuated from the town , only men are still there
fighting. Tank and air bombing is still going on.
There is no number of casualties all over Iraq, they are in hundreds . But fighting spred from Baghdad (Shula, Sadr, Adamiya) to Kerbala, Kufa, Najaf, Kut, Amara,
Nasiria, Diwaniya, Basrah(south) Kerkuk(north) Ramadi(West).
Vooral het zinnetje dat families zijn geevacueerd en alleen de mannen zijn gebleven om te vechten..... Ik blijf er een beetje op hameren, weet ik, maar de vergelijking met de cleansing strategie in Bosnie..... Vrouwen en kinderen worden geevacueerd (waarheen - door wie?), de mannen blijven. Een paar dagen rtaketten en bommen erop en dan eroverheen walsen met tanks. Een scenarion waarbij altijd veel doden vallen en die daarnaast grote schade aan infra en cultureel erfgoed/lifelyhood teweeg brengt.

An army of thousands of mercenaries has appeared in Iraq's major cities, many of them former British and American soldiers hired by the occupying Anglo-American authorities and by dozens of companies who fear for the lives of their employees.
Many of the armed Britons are former SAS soldiers and heavily armed South Africans are also working for the occupation. "My people know how to use weapons and they're all SAS," said the British leader of one security team in southern Baghdad. "But there are people running around with guns now who are just cowboys. We always conceal our weapons, but these guys think they're in a Hollywood film."

US death toll mounts as forces try to quell savage rebellion

Savage fighting raged across Iraq yesterday as at least 20 US soldiers were killed in attacks on the American-led coalition that reached a crescendo of violence not seen since the end of the war to overthrow Saddam Hussein.
At least a dozen US Marines were killed in the town of Ramadi near the Sunni hotbed of Fallujah, a US official said, when their position near the governor's palace in the city was attacked by dozens of Iraqis. The official said a "significant number" of Iraqis were also killed.

Het is net als een jaar geleden weer beschamend hoe
Nos-journaal en teletekst verstek laten gaan.
Moet de publieke omroep op paaseieren lopen vanwege
subsidies? Ik snap best dat door de Nederlandse militaire steun aan Irak het nieuws mager moet worden gebracht om
onrust te voorkomen en de centen veilig te stellen. Hoewel geen fan van RTL4, in dit geval chapeau, ik zou zeggen ga zo door.
CNN (be the first to know) laat zich weer zien als ultieme
Pentagonspreekbuis, Republikeins patriottisme dus.
Voor het beste laatste nieuws moet je, net als vorig jaar,
weer zijn bij de Duitse zenders en vooral bij TV-Cinq,
als je frans kunt lezen. Deze laatste verdient wat mij betreft een Pulitzerprijs, trouwens BRT kan ook behoorlijk meekomen.

Dan gaat het om "onze jongens"!
Vandaag wordt er in de USA ook massaal gedemonstreerd, maar
dat zal je bij de omgekochte pers niet te zien krijgen1

The Fallujah and Sadrist risings have sparked a much broader resistance
movement among the Iraqi people, one which is rapidly uniting Sunnis and
Shias, according to today’s New York Times.
Times reporter Jeffrey Gettleman was in the Khadamiya neighbourhood in
Baghdad when rumours circulated of a US raid on the local offices of the
Mahdi Army.
“Within minutes this entire Shiite neighbourhood in central Baghdad had
mobilized for war”, Gettleman reports. Behind the several thousand estimated
fighters in the Madhi Army, “there were thousands of men and boys in just
one Baghdad neighbourhood ready to fight for Mr. Sadr”, he writes. “In Sunni
bastions like Falluja and Ramadi and in Shiite areas like Sadr City, it was
growing increasingly clear that the militias could materialize almost
instantaneously.”
Gettleman also describes how Sunnis from neighbouring Adamiya joined the
Khadamiya demonstrators; rival Shia and Sunni gangs who used to “cross the
bridge to rumble” now do so to “coordinate attacks”.
A UPI report meanwhile describes the links being forged between Sadrists and
Sunnis at the national level.

Van Suleymania op weg naar de Iraanse grens. Met voor ons een escorte van drie motoragenten en achter ons een achttal geünifomeerden met Kalasnikov, rijden we langer dan een uur op hoge snelheid over een goed onderhouden asfaltweg die een tientallen kilometers brede, groene laagvlakte doorsnijdt.

The journalists and other staff of Iraq's biggest daily newspaper, Al-Sabah, have decided to step out of the Iraqi Media Network and start a new, politically and financially independent daily newspaper, AL-SABAH AL-JEDID. The decision came after more than a month of fruitless attempts
to convince the US media contractor Harris Corp to let Al-Sabah have its independence as agreed one year ago and after a series of measures to take over the newspaper.
