al lang vraag ik mij af hoe het nou eigenlijk zit met de verhouding vs/cuba vwb guantanamo bay. want vs beroept zich er toch steeds op dat guantanamo bay cubaans grondgebied is? is het dan niet zo dat cuba dus willens en wetens een stuk grond leaset aan vs waarop vs mensenrechtenschendingen kan plegen? waarom leaset cuba eigenlijk sowieso grond aan vs, de gezworen vijand? en waarom kan (kennelijk) zo'n leasecontract niet worden opgezegd wegens oneigenlijk gebruik & mensenrechtenschendingen? is er sowieso in dat leasecontract een afspraak opgenomen over waartoe guantanamo bay gebruikt mag worden? werd guantanamo bay al geleased door vs voordat er gevangenen werden gestald? en zo ja, wat deed de vs toen dan met die grond?
ik hoop dat iemand mij dit (beknopt, liever geen links naar ellenlange of anderstalige artikelen) kan vertellen want in de kranten lees ik hier allemaal nooit iets over.
en ik hoop dat de redax dit laat staan want dit is een vraag om een aanvulling op het nieuws en niet bedoeld om discussie uit te lokken (al schijnt dat rondom cuba altijd al automatisch te gebeuren of je wilt of niet).

Guantanamo Bay wordt reeds een kleine 100 jaar gehuurd door het Amerikaanse leger van Cuba. Na de Revolutie heeft de Cubaanse regering gevraagd aan de Amerikaanse overheid om de basis te ontruimen en de grond terug te geven aan de Cubanen. Om voor de hand liggende redenen geven de Amerikanen de basis niet op, ook al omdat het contract destijds met een wettige Cubaanse regering is afgesloten.
Jaarlijks ontvangt de Cubaanse overheid een cheque voor de huur die even hard weer wordt geretourneerd. Fidel erkerd de overeenkomst niet en bij acceptering van de cheque accepteerd hij ook de situatie rondom de basis.

Niet alleen de BBC meldt dat Cuba haar aanklacht voor de VN tegen de USA heeft ingetrokken.
A BBC correspondent at the UNHCR meeting in Geneva said the Cubans felt there was too much American lobbying to guarantee passing the resolution.

Vanmorgen in de Volkskrant inderdaad het bericht dat Cuba de resolutie heeft ingetrokken. Het is een aardig stukje met o.a. het onderstaande
'De verwachting was dat de resolutie tot een fel debat in de commissie zou leiden. Veel landen, ook Europese, zouden in een lastig parket zijn gekomen. De Cubanen hadden een zodanig gematigde tekst opgesteld, dat veel landen het er op zich geheel mee eens zouden zijn. Maar vóór stemmen zou een affront betekenen voor de VS'.
Maar goed, het recht van de sterkste overwint weer. Niets nieuws onder de zon. Blijft echter vervelend.

The Illegal United States Naval Base in Guantánamo.
The United States illegally maintains a naval base in Cuba against the will of its people. This facility is situated at the Guantanamo Bay, one of the biggest of Cuba. It is located 64 kilometres from Santiago of Cuba, the second city in importance, and 920 kilometres from Havana. It encompasses an area of 117.6 km2 (49.4 of mainland and the rest of water and marshes). It delimits a coastline of 17.5 kilometres. The bay has good characteristics as far as depth, security and capacity, but at the present, it lacks of strategic importance.
The Platt Amendment, a U.S. Congress´ Law, was imposed to the first Cuban Constitution at the beginning of the 20th century. In December, 1903, the United States took possession, "until they need it", of the Guantanamo Bay, by means of a one-sided treaty. Since then, and for more than half a century, this base was center to stimulate prostitution, illegal games and drugs.
Since the Cuban Revolution's triumph in 1959, the Base has been source of provocations and aggressions, from the North Americans troops and the counter-revolutionary elements that have found refuge there, many of them after committing crimes and other misdeeds. In 1961, people from the base murdered a Cuban worker and, less than a year later, a humble Cuban fisherman was kidnapped, tortured and assassinated. Two Cuban soldiers were assassinated in 1964 and 1966 respectively, by shootings made from the Base. The violations of the marine, terrestrial and aerial space committed are several as well as diverse provocations like firings, launching of stones, offences and many others.
The North American troops´ exercises have caused ecological damages to the surroundings; they have even used nuclear submarines. In 1994, violating the illegal treaty the United States uses to maintain its military presence, the base was turned into a refugee camp, and it is still used, occasionally, for this purposes. Before such Cuba facts it has assumed an attitude invariably signs and night love song, has not been let cause nor intimidate. The soldiers of the Border Brigade, unit of the Revolutionary Armed Forces in charge of the defense of this artificial limit, are example of professional preparation, value and discipline.
In many opportunities, the Cuban authorities have declared they will not accept any other negotiation concerning this territory illegally occupied unless the unconditional withdrawal of the foreign troops quartered there against Cuba's people will. With equal seriousness, the Cuban government has ratified they will not try to recover its legitimate rights by force and will patiently wait until justice prevails.

De Yanks hebben zich inderdaad als beesten gedragen op dit stukje Cuba.
De basis bestaat sedert 1898, ten tijde van de Spaans - Amerikaanse oorlog op het eiland. Formeel werd het in 1901 erkend als gevolg van het Platt amendement. Het was erg gewild bij de Yanks i.v.m. de rum en de goedkope vrouwtjes.
Per jaar kost het de Amerikaanse regering zo'n 40 miljoen dollar voor het bevoorraden van de troepen.
De huur bedraagt al sedert het begin een bedrag van 4085 dollar per jaar wat dus steevast wordt geweigerd door Fidel, de de bezetting een dolk noemt die is gestoken in het hart van het Cubaanse gronsgebied.
De soldaten vinden het nu een straf om op de basis te zitten. Het is er bloedheet, 't sterft er van de muskieten en ze vervelen er zich kapot. Een goede straf dus :-).

Zou hier niets aan te doen zijn via de VN?
Het is toch onverteerbaar dat die amerikaanse klootzakken over de gehele wereld maar kunnen doen waar ze met hun smerige geest behoefte aan hebben?
Er bestaat toch geen rechtbank ter wereld, behalve een amerikaanse, die deze grove vorm van landjepik zal accepteren?

Kijk dat de vn er niks aan kan doen zegt genoeg over de macht van de vn en de invloed van de vs in de vn.
