Hoezo zelfbeschikking Palestijnen?
John Veldhuis - 22.06.2004 09:20

Zing met mij mee:
"I have turned every stone on the way to peace / I have offered the Palestinians more generous proposals than any of my predecessors / The Palestinians have rejected all my offers / Arafat wants to throw us into the sea / We have no partner for peace."

"I have turned every stone on the way to peace / I have offered the Palestinians more generous proposals than any of my predecessors / The Palestinians have rejected all my offers / Arafat wants to throw us into the sea / We have no partner for peace.".

Weerwoord Gilad in Haaretz

"Gilad accuses Lavie of "conducting discussions behind my back with MI Commander Maj. Gen. Malka, and he had a lot of hours with ]then[ prime minister Ehud Barak but the prime minister can do what he wants. He is only obliged to read our assessments. There was plenty of
conniving behind backs, but that's allowed. I have a lot to say aboutMaj. Gen. Malka, Ephraim Lavie and Matti Steinberg ]a civilian adviser to the defense establishment[. But I don't want to get into gossip or respond to each and every point they raise. I'm just saying that I
personally briefed Lavie before he left on one of the rounds of discussions, and I told him not to be blinded by the ceremonies, and that he should remember Arafat did not give up the right of return."

Waar het mee begon
John Veldhuis - 22.06.2004 13:49

"As head of the Palestinian section in the research division of Military Intelligence, Col. (res.) Ephraim Lavie accompanied the peace process - and its collapse. He now joins the demands to investigate the `no partner' for talks concept.

The debate intensified this weekend over the question whether the head of the political-security branch at the Defense Ministry, Maj. Gen. Amos Gilad, distorted Military Intelligence assessments about Palestinian intentions before the intifada while he was head of the research division in MI. "

"A U.S. House of Representatives resolution backing Israel's demand to retain some of the West Bank and keep out Palestinian refugees marks "a great day in the history of Israel," Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Thursday. The Senate later voted to embrace a similar measure."

Gelukkig zijn er ook (nog) verstandige:

"Voting against the resolution were senators Robert Byrd, a Democrat; James Jeffords, an independent; and John Sununu, a Republican. In addition to Kerry, Senator Richard Lugar, a Republican, did not vote.

"No one should be naive enough to think this resolution will move the [peace] process further one centimeter," Byrd said."
