Athene, 10 Augustus, 2004: De 'Play Fair at the Olympics' campagne heeft vandaag actie gevoerd in Athene op de vooravond van de opening van de Olympische spelen, uit solidariteit met de arbeidsters in de sportkleding industrie wereldwijd.

Twintig vrouwen hebben zich verzameld op een dak in Athene in stil protest voor de 'Play Fair op de spelen campagne'. Er werd door 'gezichtsloze activisten' een 'naai-in' gehouden met de Acropolis op de achtergrond. De actie was opgezet om aandacht te vragen voor de duizenden die onder slechte arbeidsomstandigheden in de sportkleding industrie werken. Zij hebben te leiden onder zware werktijden, armoedige lonen, lastigvallen/aanranding en discriminatie op dagelijkse basis.

Woordvoeders van de camapgne melden dat er vooruitgang wordt gezien in de sportkleding sector, maar serieuze problemen bestaan nog steeds en er moet nog meer gedaan worden om de arbeidsters te verzekeren dat hun rechten worden gerespecteerd in deze wereldwijde industrie. Zij kondigden ook aan dat het IOC de half miljoen handtekeningen van consumenten heeft geweigerd in Athene.
