Euromayday arriveert in Amsterdam!
redactie - 01.05.2005 15:28

Euromayday arriveert in Amsterdam!

LAP - 01.05.2005 16:13

Work for Mayday 2005, Amsterdam

>From Proletariat to Precariat:
Implications for Mayday

Peter Waterman

 p.waterman@inter.nl.net

[This is the outline of an address to the EuroMayday Demonstration, held in
the Vrankrijk Squat, Spuistraat, Amsterdam, May 1, 2005, concerned with
‘info, action, videos and discussion about the new labour relations’.
Further information from www.flexmens.org or  info@flexmens.org.

The outline, here revised, is itself largely drawn from a longer paper,
‘From “Decent Work” to “The Liberation of Time from Work”: Reflections on
Work, Emancipation, Utopia and the Global Justice and Solidarity Movement’.
Inter Activist Info Exchange.

references can be found there.]

1. Introduction: Mayday

· Oxford students chant:

Hurray! Hurray! The First of May,

Outdoor sex begins today!

There is a connection with Mayday before industrialisation, often a
carnivalesque event, breaching social norms and laws, expressing an excess
that those with power disapproved or tried to repress

· Mayday was certainly Green before it was Red!

· International Labour Day: Start of international/ist campaign for
the 8-hr day

· International decline of Mayday. Now often a national/ist labour
day (e.g. Mexico City c. 1998, with no single word or symbol of
internationalism)

· Possible revival as internationalist and holistic campaign against
work-for-capital?

2. Two historical attitudes toward work in the labour movement

· A fair day’s wage for a fair day’s work!

· Abolition of wage slavery!

· The first has won but the second may be returning (see Points 4 and
5 below)

3. Work under a globalised networked capitalism

· 10-15 years ago, André Gorz pointed out that waged work in the
industrialised West, could be reduced to a 20hr working week!

· Instead we see repeated re-structuring of work, overwork,
unemployment, casualisation…the Thirdworldisation of all labour.

· The world witnesses continuing proletarianisation but without the
formation of a classical proletariat

· And the continuing internationalisation of labour without an
effective labour internationalism

4. The discovery/invention of the precariat

· The recognition of ‘precarity’ as common to labour under a
globalised networked capitalism

· The consequent necessity for a holistic and internationalist labour
movement

· The intimate articulation of the ‘movement of precarious workers’
with the global justice movement in general and World Social Forums (WSFs)
in particular

· Possible problems with ‘the precariat’ if it is given the
historical or mythical role of the proletariat.

5. ‘Decent Work’ or the ‘Liberation of Life from Work’ in the ‘global
justice and solidarity movement’ (GJ&SM)

· ‘Decent Work’ (DW) is the slogan of the International Labour
Organisation and the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions. As
with ‘A fair day’s wage for a fair day’s work’, it does not question
capitalism. It is promoted within the WSF.

· ‘The Liberation of Life from Work’ is the slogan of André Gorz. Why
has no one so far proposed this emancipatory project at a WSF?

· Let us not set these up in a traditional and sterile manichean
opposition (reform v. revolution). DW could have considerable popular
attraction.

· Aim: to reinterpret DW, as an immediate demand, in the light of the
LofLfW as a utopian principle.

· Methodology: to establish a public international dialogue between
DW and the LofLfW, and a dialectic between struggles within and struggles
beyond work-for-capital.

6. Conclusion: Mayday – the future of the past?

· The ‘precarity movement’ could struggle for the re-invention of
Mayday as, e.g.

o An International Liberation of Labour Day (for all labouring people,
including sex-workers and homecarers)

o An International Solidarity Day (for the GJ&SM as a whole) – the
re-greening or red-greening of Mayday?

o ?

· We could campaign to shift the WSF to Mayday (i.e. from opposition
to the World Economic Forum, to the proposition of an ISDay)

· Given the comparative labour-blindness of the WSF, we should use
Mayday to appeal for a ‘labour-sensitive’ WSF (on the model of the women’s
movement and feminists)

· From a position of precarity/peripherality it is possible to see
and do things that those with power/centrality (also within the WSF and the
GJ&SM) cannot.

Protest in stad tegen flexwerk
