twee minuten stilte voor Nguyen Tuong Van
Mieke WA Minkjan - 01.12.2005 12:03

Nguyen’s mother fled Vietnam alone in a boat in 1980 and had her twin sons in a transit camp in Malaysia before being accepted into Australia four months later.
The whole community of Melbourne is very upset because the Gouverment of Singapore will execute the death penalty on Nguyen Tuong Van this Friday, 2 december 2005.
He was caught with 396g of heroin on his person and in his hand luggage in Singapore's Changi airport in 2002. Any individual caught with more than 15g is presumed to be a trafficker and faces the death penalty if convicted. And on Nguyen's own admission, there was never any doubt he was guilty. Nor do his reasons for trafficking in the drug – to pay off his brother's gambling debts – provide any mitigation. Nguyen took a calculated risk and lost. But though Nguyen's cause looks lost, judicial murder is wrong. No ifs, no buts.
