Op de Filipijnen groeit het aantal vrijwilligers dat haar beschikbaar stelt voor de bestrijding van een gigantische olievlek bij het eiland Guimaras. Kapsalons en gevangenen melden zich massaal aan en ook president Arroyo bemoeit zich met de rampbestrijding.

In Manila hebben zo'n 500 kapsalons al het afgeknipte haar van de afgelopen dagen verzameld en beschikbaar gesteld, zo meldt persbureau AP. Ze hebben aangeboden scholieren op alle openbare scholen gratis te knippen. In een van de gevangenissen in de sloppenwijken van de hoofdstad hebben ruim 11.000 gevangenen zich vrijwillig aangemeld om hun hoofd te laten scheren.

President Arroyo heeft een speciale regeringscommissie in het leven geroepen om de collectie van al het menselijke haar en de even zo nuttige kippenveren voorspoedig te laten verlopen.

Natuurlijke barrière

Het haar en de veren worden gebruikt in poreuze zakken die als natuurlijke barrière moeten dienen voor de olievlek. Deze ontstond nadat op 11 augustus de tanker Solar met twee miljoen liter olie zonk. De ergste olieramp in de geschiedenis van het land heeft tot nog toe 300 kilometer kust besmeurd en circa 500 hectare waardevolle mangrovebossen en zeegrasvelden beschadigd.

De zich uitbreidende vlek bedreigt nu natuurreservaten en druk bezochte toeristische stranden van het eiland Guimaras.

Huiselijke experimenten

Het idee om haar te gebruiken is afkomstig uit de Verenigde Staten. Volgens AP kwam een kapper uit Alabama na wat huiselijke experimenten tot de conclusie dat haar olie aan zich bindt.

De Filipijnse zeebioloog Rex Sadaba beschouwt de low-tech methode als een lapmiddel. Haar noch kippenveren absorberen de olie, stro zou bovendien hygiënischer zijn. AP meldt bovendien dat de rampenbestrijders al hebben geklaagd over de stank van tonnen kippenveren die een grote voedselproducent gratis ter beschikking van de Filipijnse overheid heeft gesteld.
