Schoonmakers binden strijd aan met multinationals
beteretoekomst - 19.11.2007 21:26

Last Saturday, a campaign in the cleaning sector was launched. Here a report. This week campaigning starts and help is needed. See  http://www.beteretoekomst.org

Cleaners ready to take on multinationals

17 November 2007 - Hundreds of cleaners met at Schiphol this afternoon to kick off a campaign for ten euro per hour and a respectful treatment by their employers. The cleaners also call on clients of cleaning companies to support them.

“The problems we are facing are partly caused by the cleaning companies, but the clients are responsible too. [...] Therefore we call on all clients to support us. They can ask cleaning companies to sign the new collective agreement”, cleaner Dina Govers from the Hague said.

Cleaners from Maastricht said that cleaning company CSU, which recently received a ‘best employer’ award, in fact treats its employees far from good, paying one immigrant worker even as little as seven euro per hour, which is illegal.

The low pay of the cleaners contrasts with the riches of the CEOs of cleaning companies. Three of them are on the Quote 500 list of richest people in the Netherlands, Zwarte Piet announced at this afternoon’s meeting.

Chairwoman Agnes Jongerius of the Netherlands Trade Union Confederation (FNV) said that it will be difficult to take on multinational corporations that will do anything to cut costs at the expense of the cleaners. “It is an unequal fight, but it is a fight that we can win”.

Polit-clowns, Singer-clowns & Clowncleaners
Rebelact - 20.11.2007 12:07

We saw the pictures and read the story: of course it was all about the cleaners. But also the entertainment industry was there in solidairity: we saw very nice, colourful Turkish dancers, we heard Joop Visser singing (wellknown from 1964 -1975 as Jaap Fischer). Also a real Gospel Choir (the cleaners have the support of the Lord!) and 2 politicians; one from the Green Left (Naïma Azough) and the only coloured one from the SP-fraction of 25 Members in the Second Room: Saadet Karabulut.

For us, the clowncleaners, it was a great chance to demonstrate how well we are trained in cleaning: we cleaned everything, even the stage. The politicians are clearly not used to hold their banal speeches while such profound actvities are going on next to them! And Agnes Jongerius felt in love with a clown: she got really red when one clown kissed her, and there are rumours that she is going to quit her boring job at the trade union and join the underground city guerilla of the Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army: uuhh!
Unfortunately Santa Claus and a lot of black piets came, so we had to run away from the circus!
