Hey , I don't know how often you check your E-mail these days, but I hope It's soon. I have something important that i need your help on. Two weeks ago, my friend and one of our community's best activists, Marie Mason, was kidnapped by the FBI on terrorism charges. She's being charged with an arson that happened eight years ago in michigan, and she faces up to ten years in prison. Her arrest is part of a larger "Green Scare" campaign initiated by the Homeland Security office to brand environmental activists as terrorists.
For the last three weeks, she has been held under horrible conditions. She is being held in solitary confinement, in complete isolation for 23 hours per day. She has been allowed only two 20-minute "visits" per week. In these "visits" Marie's 16-year-old daughter cannot actually see her mother in person. Instead she must view her face through a TV screen as she talks to her on a telephone in a small visitor's cell, standing the entire time because no chairs are provided. As if this wasn't enough, Marie is vegan but is not being provided with food that she can eat. She has been living on oatmeal since her arrest. These conditions are inhuman and unacceptable.
On thursday, a judge ordered her released on house arrest, meaning that she will not be able to leave her parent's home until the trial. However, Marie is still in jail now and will be there for at least another week.
Their is no physical evidence to connect her to the arson, which means that she can win the case, but she needs a good lawyer. Here in the USA, good lawyers cost money, $20,000- $60,000 dollars. Marie is a school teacher, and school teachers don't make much money over here. She has no savings. She rents her house so she can't even sell that. She needs us to support her. Talk to your crew in Utrecht or wherever you are about doing a solidarity party for her, whether that's a big concert or a quiet dinner or whatever else you can think of.
The US government is working hard to isolate Marie, but we can fight them by letting her know that we support her. Have a letter-writing party for Marie; set up a table with paper and pens and paint and let people express their solidarity. I know that it's hard to write to someone in jail. It's hard to know what to say, but getting letters from activists in the Netherlands will let her know that she is not alone in this. Just a paper that says: "We love you, we support you, solidarity from your friends in _______." would make a world of difference to Marie.
