Teken petitie: Vrouwenbeweging(e.a.) in Nicaragua vervolgd!
Womens rights now!!! - 22.10.2008 10:00

Please sign this petition to defend human rights workers from the
threats of the Ortega government:

English translation:

STOP THE REPRESSION OF HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS IN NICARAGUA

To: Women and men defenders of human rights around the world

OPEN LETTER TO NICARAGUAN PRESIDENT DANIEL ORTEGA AND ATTORNEY GENERAL
JULIO CENTENO GOMEZ

For months we have witnessed with indignation the development of a
campaign by the current government of Nicaragua, with the complicity of
the Attorney General's Office, to viciously discredit and persecute
feminists and women's organizations of national and international renown
for their defence of women's and girls' human rights. You are personally
and directly responsible for this campaign and the consequences it has had
thus far and may still have in the future.

We have been astonished by the level of disrespect for the rule of law
shown by your actions. Violating the most basic principle of the right to
due process, investigations have been kept open for months, in some
occasions for over a year, without there being any charges brought and
without providing any information to the persons who have been declared as
suspects.

Nonexistant crimes have been made up, such as the "triangulation" of
resources, and arbitrary attempts have been made to link them with
criminal acts without even any evidence. What is now being called
triangulation is nothing more than an absolutely legal and common practice
in the field of cooperation, one which has in the past benefited the
Sandinista government itself. It consists of carrying out initiatives that
encompass different actors and actions that share the same objectives.

At the same time, all the state's resources are being used to disseminate
their slander campaign in the media and they are attempting silence the
voices of those who will not join this campaign, closing down media
outlets and persecuting those in charge.

None of this can hide - by contrast it makes it quite obvious - that the
reason for this disaster is the attempt to silence the dissident voices of
these women who are exercising their citizenship rights by demanding a
more just and democratic society and who have fought for this for decades.
Many of them fought together with the thousands of Nicaraguans who
overthrew the ignominious dictatorship and they do not want to see a
return to despotism, repression and the annullment of the judicial,
legislative and electoral branches of the state, which are today bringing
Nicaragua ever closer to the conditions under the Somoza dictatorship.

The crime committed by these feminists is well known nationally and
internationally. It has to do with believing the testimony of an abused
woman, standing up and showing themselves to be against violence, incest,
impunity and the cult of personality. In summary, they have put human
rights above the false loyalties demanded of them, they have believed in
their principles, and they have confronted arrogance, even on the part of
the presidency of the republic.

The current harassment campaign is not only to exact your own personal
revenge, Mister Ortega. It is also about your imperious need, as part of
your calculations of absolute control over the Nicaraguan state and
society. The women's movement is a voice that is denouncing your
dictatorial project, a voice that is not allowing itself to be silenced
because it is not afraid of you.

We are greatly concerned that slander and irrational, impassioned speeches
are being used to incite the followers of your regime to act anonomously
and with impunity, which they know in advance that they are guaranteed.

The attacks on the homes of some of these feminists, the spreading of
slanderous messages that label others as traitors, the attacks on people
from the oposition by assault groups commanded by political figures of the
party in power, they make us fear for the integrity of these feminists and
of all those who exercise their legitimate right to dissent in Nicaragua.

In view of this situation, which demands the solidarity of human rights
defenders from around the world, we Costa Rican organizations and the
people who have signed below:

1. We demand that the persecution of members of the Autonomous Women's
Movement, the Women's Network agaisnt Violence, Grupo Venancia and other
civil society and international cooperation organizations that are being
arbitrarily harassed by both of you be put to an end.

2. We repudiate the use that you and people close to you have been making
of the power of your offices to persecute those who oppose you in any way.

3. We hold you personally responsible for the security and integrity of
the feminists who you have exposed to violence through the positions of
power you hold.

4. We demand that the judiciary act in strict accordance with the laws,
transparent and free of political pressure, and thereby immediately
refrain from the practices of harassment to which it has been subjecting
members of human rights organizations.

5. As people who defend human rights, we declare Daniel Ortega and the
members of his government to be persona non grata and we will negotiate
with our authorities so that this initiative will be oficially embraced.

6. We support the petitions of diverse social movements, networks and
organizations legally constituted in Nicaragua society that denounce the
acts of persecution being carried out by the Nicaraguan government under
the leadership of the President of the Republic, Mr. Daniel Ortega
Saavedra.

7. As people who defend human rights, we demand that all Iberamerican
governments speak out against these acts during the XVIII Iberian American
Summit of Heads of State and Government which will be taking place in El
Salvador on October 28-30, and we demand that Mr. Ortega stop the
repression of human rights defenders.

 http://www.google.com/search?q=%22feministas+contra+la+impunidad%22

 http://news.google.com/news?q=nicaragua+woman+rights

Zoals:
 http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1850451,00.html

 http://news.google.com/news?ned=es_mx&hl=es&q=nicaragua+mujeres
