Life in fragments, 12-14 juni in De Balie

Van 12 tot en met 14 juni vindt in De Balie in Amsterdam het festival Life in Fragments plaats. Het festival laat zien hoe mensenrechtenactivisten videofragmenten gebruiken als instrument voor verzet tegen de Israëlische bezetting van de Palestijnse gebieden. Tijdens het festival is op verschillende locaties in de Randstad de fototentoonstelling ‘What you think you see’ te zien.

In juni 2009 is het 42 jaar geleden dat Israël de Westelijke Jordaanoever, Oost-Jeruzalem en de Gazastrook bezette. Life in Fragments toont de Israëlische bezetting, door korte films te vertonen die zijn gemaakt door mensenrechtenorganisaties en individuele Israëlische en Palestijnse activisten. Dit ‘video activisme’ geeft bewoners en activisten de mogelijkheid om “terug te schieten” met de camera. Zo ontstaat een realistisch beeld van het leven onder bezetting en van hen die zich tegen deze bezetting verzetten. Het gaat hierbij niet om grote verhalen over helden, maar over gewone mensen.
Iedere vertoning wordt gevolgd door interviews en discussies met Israëlische activisten. Sommigen van hen zijn ook te zien in de fragmenten die worden getoond.
Het festival wordt geopend door Oren Yakobovich van de Israëlische mensenrechtenorganisatie B’Tselem. Hij initieerde het ‘camera distribution project’ waarbij Palestijnen een videocamera krijgen om zelf hun leven onder bezetting te documenteren. De beelden van geweld door Israëlische kolonisten die werden gefilmd zorgden in de hele wereld voor opschudding.
De volgende gasten zijn ook aanwezig tijdens het festival:
Ashraf Ibrahim Daraburahma is actief bij de Popular Committee in Bil’in. Daraburahma werd in het kader van het 'camera distribution project' gefilmd toen een Israëlische soldaat hem in zijn voet schoot terwijl hij geboeid en geblinddoekt was. Zijn broer werd onlangs tijdens een demonstratie gedood door het Israëlische leger. De komst van Daraburahma is onzeker, omdat hij nog wacht op een visum.
Lymor Goldstein is activist bij Anarchists against the Wall. Goldstein werd zelf door het Israëlische leger in zijn hoofd geschoten tijdens een demonstratie in het Palestijnse dorp Bil’in In het dagelijks leven is hij mensenrechtenadvocaat. Hij vertegenwoordigt onder andere Ashraf Ibrahim Daraburahma.
Merav Amir coördineert het videodocumentatie-project van Machsom Watch, een organisatie van Israëlische vrouwen die dagelijks aanwezig zijn bij checkpoints in de bezette Palestijnse gebieden om het gedrag van Israëlische militairen te monitoren en de bewegingsvrijheid van Palestijnen te bevorderen.
Jonathan Massey is een activist bij Anarchists against the Wall. Hij heeft veel anti-bezettings acties op video vastgelegd en heeft o.a. het neerschieten van Lymor Goldstein gefilmd.
Onderdeel van Life in Fragments is de fototentoonstelling What you think you see. De foto’s zijn gemaakt door leden van het fotografencollectief ActiveStills. Zij werken vanuit de overtuiging dat beeld een krachtig protestmiddel kan zijn, alsook een stimulans voor maatschappelijke verandering. De tentoonstelling is onder andere te zien in De Balie Café, Studio K en Vrankrijk in Amsterdam. In Den Haag is de tentoonstelling te zien in het Emmahuis en het kantoor van GroenLinks.
Life in Fragments wordt georganiseerd door gate48, een platform voor kritische Israëli’s die in Nederland leven.

'Video activism' from the Israeli occupation
Israel has been occupying the West Bank and Gaza Strip for 42 years now. As a result, some 5 million Palestinians are deprived of their basic human rights; their movement is severely restricted and they often do not have access to clean water, education and health facilities. They live with the threat of house demolitions, constant violence by Israeli settlers and a military presence that has cost the lives of thousands.
Life in Fragments will present critical views on the Israeli military occupation by screening activist videos. These are short films without heroes, but with real people. With no narratives, just fragments of lived experiences. Made by human rights organizations and individual activists, both Israelis and Palestinians, these collections of citizen journalism should be seen as fragments of reality, raw testimonies told from the ground level of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. A mechanism for witnessing and “shooting back”, through the lens of a camera provides un-edited views of both people under occupation, and the activists resisting it.
Life in Fragments will screen videos shot by Israeli human rights organizations like B’tselem, Machsom Watch, Breaking the Silence and Anarchists Against the Wall, as well as individual activists. All screenings will be followed by interviews and discussions with human rights activists, some of whom made the videos or appear in them.
Life in Fragments also features an exhibition of photos by Activestills, an independent collective of Israeli documentary photographers. Through their images they dedicate themselves to the struggle for social change in Israel and Palestine. These images will be displayed in De Balie Café.
