Ecuador: Protestbeweging tegen de FTAA
Op 29 oktober 2002 begint in Quito, Ecuador, het 7e Business Forum van de Americas plaats. Meer dan duizend bedrijven komen bijeen met hun voorstellen voor de tweede concepttekst van de Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA, ALCA in het Spaans). Hierna vind van de 31ste tot 3 november de 7e Ministeriele Conferentie plaats om de onderhandelen te vervolgen over de FTAA. Aan deze bijeenkomst nemen afgevaardigden van alle 34 Amerikaanse landen (behalve Cuba) deel en onder andere afgevaardigden van de WTO (World Trade Organization), de IDB (Inter-American Development Bank), de President van de Kamer van Koophandel van de Verenigde Staten en de Organisation of American States (OAS).
Ondanks dat deze bijeenkomsten en onderhandelingsrondes achter gesloten deuren plaatsvinden zijn de deelnemers hieraan niet alleen. Op straat zullen duizenden personen en organisaties aanwezig zijn om te protesteren tegen de FTAA. Tegelijkertijd vinden er in heel Latijns Amerika informatie-bijeenkomsten en acties plaats. In sommige landen vinden referenda plaats, zoals in Brazilië in september, waar door tien miljoen mensen aan deelgenomen werd die nagenoeg allen de deelname van Brazilië aan de vrijhandelszone absoluut van de hand wezen.
In Quito organiseren honderden organisaties en groepen uit Ecuador en de rest van Latijns Amerika een week van protesten tegen de FTAA. Enkele van de belangrijkste activiteiten hierin zijn de vier karavanen georganiseerd door inheemse groepen en vakbonden die vertrekken vanuit de verschillende grensgebieden in Ecuador op 23 oktober en via de grote steden, waar duizenden personen zich bij de tocht aansluiten, op 30 oktober in Quito aankomen waar een grote demonstratie wordt georganiseerd. Ook op 31 oktober en 1 november zijn er grote demonstraties en manifestaties in de stad.

Op 1 november vindt er in Quito een informele bijeenkomst plaats van de het netwerk PGA (People Global Action). Op verschillende plaatsen in de wereld vinden er tegelijkertijd solidariteits-acties plaats; in Pittsburgh ( http://www.organizepittsburgh.org),Quebec, Montevideo ( http://uruguay.indymedia.org/news/2002/10/7156.php) en Barcelona.
Wat is de FTAA?:
Een verdrag tussen alle landen van het continent Amerika (behalve Cuba) geïnitieerd door de Verenigde Staten. Gericht op het bewerkstelligen van een vrije circulatie van producten en kapitaal van Alaska tot aan Vuurland. Via dit verdrag wil de VS de economische controle over de landen van het gehele continent verkrijgen. De onderhandelingen voor de FTAA vinden in het geheim plaats, de bevolking, organisaties en zelfs parlementen van de deelnemende landen worden buitengesloten. Diegenen die over het verdrag onderhandelen zijn de overheden via de ministers en de grote bedrijven.
Wie profiteren er van de FTAA?:
De VS willen hun economische problemen oplossen en de markten van Latijns Amerika en de Cariben ongelimiteerd controleren, zonder gehinderd te worden door douanes, tariefmuren en bescherming van de nationale economieën en zonder last te hebben van concurrentie. De FTAA richt zich alleen maar op een vrije circulatie van producten en diensten, maar staat de circulatie van personen en arbeiders niet toe. De FTAA is een strategie van economische dominantie, van het onttrekken van natuurlijke en menselijke bronnen.
Zoals Bill Clinton opmerkte: “Wij vormen 4% van de wereldbevolking en beschikken over 22% van de totale rijkdom. Als we deze rijkdom in stand willen houden moeten we verkopen aan de overgebleven 96% van de bevolking”. Deze opmerking vormt een duidelijk bewijs voor de motivatie van de interesse van de VS in Latijns Amerika.
Als de FTAA uitgevoerd wordt betekent het serieuze aantasting van de soevereiniteit van de landen en volken. Deze landen zullen dan zijn overgeleverd aan de macht van de bedrijven en Amerikaanse investeerders, hen beperken tot de export van basis-producten, het onderdeel uitmaken van produktie-ketens, en toeleveren van goedkope arbeidskracht.

Van de negen onderhandelingsgroepen die regelmatig bijeenkomen om de implementatie van de FTAA (Free Trade Area of the Americas, Pan-Amerikaanse Vrijhandelszone) te bevorderen, houdt één zich specifiek bezig met het thema landbouw. De ontwerptekst van de Pan-Amerikaanse Vrijhandelszone is eindelijk openbaar gemaakt. De tekst, die moet uitmonden in een verdrag dat in 2006 de handelsbarrieres tussen Noord- en Latijns-Amerika moet wegnemen, staat sinds 3 juli 2002 op het internet. De brede protestbeweging die zich verzet tegen de FTAA klaagt al maanden dat het overleg over de grootste vrijhandelszone ter wereld op een ondemocratische manier achter gesloten deuren verloopt. Het verzet was tot dusver gebaseerd op uitgelekte informatie en halve rapporten. Nu de tekst er is, kan de anti-FTAA beweging de vijand met open vizier bestrijden.

The FTAA Protests
Ecuador, October-November 2002
Friends and Compañeros of the Indymedia collectives.
The objective of this letter is to inform you about the FTAA protests and ask for your collaboration in the coverage of the distinct activities being carried out by the different organizations, collectives and networks of country.
From the 30th to the 1st of November, 2002, in Quito, the capitol of Ecuador, around 1,000 businesspeople will revise and make proposals regarding the second rought draft ( http://www.tecninegocios.net/abf/n_borrador.htm) of the Free Trade Area of the Americas - FTAA ( http://acp.sindominio.net/article.pl?sid=02/10/23/2236229&mode=thread), and immediately following this event the Seventh Ministerial Meeting of the Americas (oficial web page : http://www.abfecuador2002.com program: http://ecuador.indymedia.de/es/2002/10/282.shtml) will be carried out, from the 31st to the 3rd of November, where the proposals will be discussed of the "only ones who have a óbice" in order to decide upon the future of the Americas, the powerful and their cohorts - the actual goverments of the moment, except Cuba.
The Social Movements: campesino and indigenous organizations, women, people from poor neighborhoods, students, people from all over the Continent have organized the anti/FTAA protests, which will have as their major epicenter Quito ( http://www.ecuador.indymedia.org), but these actions will also be multiplied throughout the American Continent.
Among the most significant activities that will form part of the beginning of the protests in Ecuador are the caravans organized by the largest indigenous/campesino organizations of the country, such as the CONAIE (Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities and Peoples of Ecuador (english: http://conaie.nativeweb.org/brochure.html), the CONFEUNASSC-CNC (National Confederation of Campesino Social Security Affiliates - National Campesino Council http://mingasocial.org/campesinos/index.html), the ECUARUNARI (Federation of Kiwcha People of the Highlands of Ecuador http://ecuarunari.nativeweb.org) and the FENOCIN (National Federation of Campesino, Afro-Ecuadorian and Indigenous Organizations http://fenocin.nativeweb.org). These caravans will begin from the four cardinal points of the country, the capitals of the different provinces as well as the national borders, and will be joined by our brothers and sisters of the neighboring countries. They will begin on the 23rd of October and they will massively converge on Quito on the 30th of October, when they will "take" Quito.
On the other hand, Sunday, the 27th of October will see the beginning of the activities in Quito with the artistic and cultural festival "Another America is Possible", within the framework of the forums organized by the Continental Campaign Against the FTAA and the Continental Social Forum ( http://movimientos.org/noalca). The Festival will take place in the "El Arbolito" park, historic site of the indigenous mobilizations that have overthrown two corrupt neoliberal presidents over the last couple of years. The forum organized by the campaign will count on the participation of thousands of men and women from throughout the Continent as well as friends and comrades from other Continents, united in the struggle against neoliberalism.
There will also be a forum ( http://ecuador.indymedia.org/es/2002/10/330.shtml http://www.nadir.org/nadir/initiativ/agp/free/imf/ecuador/txt/2002/1017Encuentro_Continental.htm) organized by the Conferedation of Latin American Rural Organizations (CLOC in Spanish http://www.movimientos.org/cloc), which will take place from the 28th to the 30th of October. As of now, we know about the participation of comrades such as Evo Morales (Bolivia), Jose Bove (France), Rafael Alegria (Peru), Joao Pedro Stiglitz (Brasil) as well as other important comrades in the fight against neoliberalism.
Other diverse spaces are organizing symbolic actions, marches, street blockades, etc. in order to give voice to the excluded, who one day in the near future will finally be in charge of deciding over our own destiny, just as all of us of the Americas deserve.

We invite all of you to participate together with us in the coverage of these mobilizations, which, together with the indigenous-communist victory in the first electoral round of the ex-Coronel Lucio Guttierez (who formed an active part of the indigenous uprising of January 2000), could prove to give important strength to the days of resistence against neoliberalism and the FTAA.
