Actiesite voor Vanunu gelanceerd

Vandaag heeft de SP de website Vanunu.nl geopend. Mordechai Vanunu is de Israëlische atoomtechnicus die in 1985 onthulde dat Israël een uitgebreid kernwapenarsenaal heeft. De laatste 18 jaar heeft hij voor deze moedige daad in de gevangenis gezeten. Op 21 april wordt Vanunu vrijgelaten en via de website kunt u hem feliciteren met zijn op handen zijnde vrijlating.
In de Israëlische regering gaan echter stemmen op om Vanunu huisarrest te geven of geen paspoort te verstrekken. Daarom is er op de site tevens een petitie te vinden om er bij de Israëlische autoriteiten op aan te dringen Vanunu zijn volledige vrijheid te gunnen.
De discussie over het vraagstuk van non-proliferatie is er in de afgelopen 18 jaar alleen maar belangrijker op geworden. Iran, Irak, Libië en Noord-Korea zijn de laatste jaren op de korrel genomen omdat ze aan kernwapenproductie zouden doen. Op zich is dat een goed teken, maar opvallend is dat de positie van Israël buiten beeld blijft. Wij zien de vrijlating van Vanunu als een mooie gelegenheid om de strijd voor non-proliferatie opnieuw onder de aandacht te brengen.
We vragen u Mordechai Vanunu een felicitatie te sturen, de Israëlische regering te verzoeken hem écht vrij te laten en al uw collega’s, vrienden en kennissen te wijzen op het bestaan van de site.

Behalve het Palestijnse volk, dat in de grootste openluchtgevangenis aller tijden leeft, gaat Israel nu ook een van hun eigen burgers in een van hun steden opsluiten.
Denkt-ie zijn straf uitgezeten te hebben, komen ze met:
"Vanunu will be allowed to choose his town of residence, but will be forbidden to leave city limits unless he reports his intentions to the local police force.
In addition, Vanunu will not be allowed to approach any border terminal, including Ben-Gurion International Airport, the country's ports, or borders with the Palestinian Authority, as stipulated in a list of crossing points to be given to him by security officials. Also, Vanunu will not be allowed to be in contact with foreigners - whether in face-to-face meetings or by telephone, fax, or email - including foreign citizens residing in Israel.
Vanunu also will not be allowed to approach foreign embassies and divulge details to anyone regarding the Dimona plant where he worked or the circumstances of his being kidnapped and transported to Israel.
Vanunu will be informed that he will not have passport privileges, and therefore, cannot leave the country."

might? Gooi hem dan gelijk in arbitraire detentie...
oh nee administratieve, ach wat is het verschil.
Geldt onze wet ter bescherming van klokkenluiders ook voor buitenlanders? Zijn onze mariniers in staat deze man te redden van het zijn eigen (en andermans) kinderen offerende regime?
Of moeten ze het hele Israelische volk maar gelijk redden van hun leider?

Het positieve:
"A veritable "Vanunu festival" is planned to mark the prisoner's long-awaited release. Peace activists and anti-nuclear campaigners from the United States, Britain, Japan, Ireland, Poland, Hungary and other countries have been arriving in Israel since last week. They will number some 90 individuals, says Rina Moss of the Israeli Committee to Free Mordechai Vanunu, which is coordinating the planned events. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Maguire of Northern Ireland, actress Susannah York, British parliamentarians Jeremy Corbyn and Colin Breed, and Reverend Bruce Kent, the president of the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, are among those expected to attend. Playwright Harold Pinter, actress Emma Thompson and London Mayor Ken Livingstone have sent letters of support that will be read during the ceremonies outside the prison.
The 90 foreigners will be joined by a few hundred Israelis, who will hold a solidarity watch outside the prison gates tomorrow, and welcome Vanunu on his release the following day. Local and international television crews will also be present to broadcast live from the scene."

"On Saturday, Shin Bet security service officials at Ben-Gurion International Airport detained and questioned Sharon Wallace in the presence of her three children, aged 10, 15 and 17, for some three hours. Luca, the youngest of the three children, is the son of Meir Vanunu and the nephew of Mordechai Vanunu.
"They made us undergo a pretty humiliating physical examination," Sharon Wallace, who holds a U.S. passport, told Haaretz Saturday night. "And they accused me of planning to use my children to pass on classified information from Mordechai following his release from prison. I told them that it was insulting to hear empty claims such as these."
A day earlier, Ernest Rodker, coordinator of the British wing of the Campaign to Free Vanunu and for a Nuclear Free Middle East, was detained at the airport for a similar length of time. During his interrogation, the Shin Bet officials asked him if he was carrying anything in his belongings that could be detrimental to Israel. "They held me for hours without explaining to me why," Rodker told Haaretz. "I find it hard to understand this paranoid behavior; it reeks of a police state."
