COME AND JOIN us
refugees of We Are Here
in our struggle for the right to housing and proper medical assistance

On Thursday 18th of December we will meet at 15.45 hrs at the main entrance of Amsterdam city hall. From there we will march to the Beursplein to listen to speeches and music.

On November 10th, the European Commission of Social Rights (ECSR) ruled that the Netherlands is violating the rights of irregular migrants under the European Social Charter. The large majority of undocumented migrants without resources who have not been returned are generally not provided with accommodation and are denied proper medical assistance.
As recalled by the ECSR , the Dutch government should provide appropriate short-term assistance to any persons in a situation of immediate and urgent need. No one in the country should be deprived of food, clothing or shelter. This also applies to rejected asylum seekers. They should be looked after, rather than put out on the street.
The ECSR notes that the right to shelter is closely connected to the right to life and crucial for the respect of every person’s human dignity. Moreover, the ECSR argues that access to sufficient health care is a prerequisite for the preservation of human dignity and this should be granted within the minimum protection provided to migrants.
Amsterdam proposes a night shelter for refugees for 12 hours a day only. This doesn’t constitute adequate care, leaves people on the streets during the day, in the cold, carrying their belongings with them. The asylum seekers want a 24 hour accommodation, so that residents can be in a warm and safe place all day and work on their own future in peace. Shelter is not an objective but a means, a means to work on a real future and a life with human dignity.
