ABC OF A STRIKE (ABC DA GREVE)
Leon Hirszman, 1990, Brazilië, 75'

Filmed in the late 1970s in the industrial cities around Sao Paulo, ABC da Greve (ABC* of a Strike) by Leon Hirszman is a realistic and attentive look at the labour movement events and constant workers strikes during the repressive years of Brazil's military regime. The metal workers trade union, led by the activist Lula (later the Brazilian president from 2003 - 2010), demanded better working conditions and better pay, fighting not only against their employers but also against the political establishment at the time.

In the context of the current Brazilian political situation - following a parliamentary coup d'etat in 2016 when conservative forces illegally overthrew President Dilma Rousseff, Lula's Workers Party ally - please join us for a showing of Leon Hirszman's documentary and an informal discussion. With the participation of Brazilian members of the Collective Amsterdam against the Coup d'Etat and for Democracy, we will take a look at the trade union movement that helped to defeat the military dictatorship in the 1970s - 1980s and build a collective understanding of the forces at play in Brazil in the current period.

"We are developing a complex film in which the working classes play a new role based on their own experience. The advancement of productive forces in the ABC region gave rise to the necessary conditions for large scale mobilisations with a high level of class consciousness. This was expressed in this struggle that we see in the documentary: peaceful, organised and of great value to all Brazilian workers, so that they understand the need to fight for their rights, to organise and to overcome illegality. It is about establishing a new legality, which is the strike as a form of action and demand-making.” Leon Hirszman (in an interview with Fernando Morais, 1989)

*ABC is the name given to the industrial belt around the city of São Paulo

---
